The Little Things
Apr 01, 2022As a professional that works with children in need, I have seen this impact many times. I want to share a couple stories of how this message has played out in my life and career.
I share these stories to show how much we impact people and we may not realize it. When people are seen, valued, heard, and are able to talk through different things that they have going on in their lives, their worlds can shift.
I have a kiddo in my world that has a lot of struggles. Years ago, when I didn't know how to help her, I reached out to a colleague and trauma therapist for advice. What he said was "keep showing up."
During that time, I felt like nothing I did helped this child. But, I did continue to show up. Six years later and it has made a difference. This relationship is something that brings her joy and she is going to remember.
Although just showing up may feel like a small thing to do, it has made a difference.
Years ago, there was another kiddo I also showed up for. When we were together, I made it a point to give him my focused attention. I listened, asked his opinion, and valued his voice. This kiddo is all grown up now and has told me how much me including him had meant. To me, I was only treating a young person with respect, but to him, I was valuing his perspective and this meant more to him than I realized.
Think about your own life and who showed up for you. What did this mean to you?
What are some of the little things you already do for others?
What are some little things you can start doing?
- Keep showing up
- Listen to them
- Express interest in what they are saying
- Include them
- Add a positive note to their lunchbox
There are people in this world that you have positively impacted and you may not even realize it. They are out there and all the little things that you do matter :-)
